Canada Mountain Guides is a full-service private guiding company in the Canadian Rockies. Owned and operated by Matt Peter, an internationally certified Mountain Guide, Canada Mountain Guides specializes in creating custom skiing, climbing or instructional mountain adventures in Canada and abroad.
Originally from Edmonton Alberta, Matt's first foray into the mountains came through an Outward Bound youth course in the Coast Ranges of BC in 1988. Returning to Edmonton to find a brand new indoor climbing wall at the University of Alberta and with a new enthusiasm for mountains and climbing, the pieces were set that would evolve into a life as a Mountain Guide!
Matt began his guiding career with teaching indoor climbing at the U of A's climbing wall in 1991, and grew quickly into weekend rock and waterfall ice climbing courses through the Campus Outdoor Centre. He took his first course with ACMG in 1994, which began the path towards the International Mountain Guide certification.
Having extensive indoor/instructional experience, he was asked to be a part of the team that developed the ACMG Climbing Instructor certification stream in 1997. This stream certifies Climbing Gym Instructors and TopRope Climbing Instructors and now has close to 400 members!
Over the years, Matt has given back into the ACMG through committee work and has sat on the Board of Directors in many different positions, including Apprentice Guide Rep, Speciality Guide Rep, Climbing Instructor Rep, as well as the Vice President.
